The Day My World Fell Apart: A Maker's Tale
This is not the video I intended to make. This video was about woodworking... batching out yoga mat hooks and helping my friend who owns a pilates studio save her a small fortune. That was until I was halfway through filming that project, and my whole world came crashing down. It has taken a while to decide to publish this, but if my story can help just one other person, it'll be worth it. I couldn't do it alone, so I reached out to some friends to help...

    Question from a humble newbie, is this stronger that the original screw was (pre rotting and looseness), or is it weaker since it's screwed into the dowel instead of the back wood, or is it not any different

    • @FixitFingers
      @FixitFingers 16 дней назад

      @@azimmorganam as you are screwing into the end grain of the dowel instead of face grain of the wood, that could be a little weaker. However, modern screws have better grab and I used a longer, higher gauge screw so overall I think the repair is stronger than the original. The trouble with this attachment is that it CAN'T be used with the Gerni 7300 pressure washer which has a output pressure of 2320psi and this drain tube can only take a pressure up to 2175psi and that's because it's not steel reinforced. If you do use it with the Gerni 7300 then you risk bursting the drain hose severely injuring yourself in the process. Gerni should make a drain cleaning hose that's able to take the pressure of the 7300.

      Thanks for your story Andrew. I had a comment that I was lucky to have support around me... and he was right. Yet it still took me to have a breakdown before I reached out to it. I had a friend who did the same... he never recovered from losing his mum to cancer. He was a brilliant maker, he *literally* made the south pole for a few years... like, the actual pole. (Google it, it is amazing the effort they go to each year.) Yet, none of us knew he was struggling until we were invited to Zoom call into his funeral by his sister... I think many people who feel alone, are often struggling to see the love around them. This may not be universally true, so people are not so lucky, but if we can encourage others to speak up, some may come to realise what is right in front on them.

    How to put it in words not being too long but still giving all background to make it have a sense. I try to be concise. Never saw a video of yours (or any of your friend) before as much as I can tell. Algorithm sent this my way. Didn't want to watch it thinking you had an injury like cutting off a finger or something, I am not watching those. But I came to the comments to see what is going on and eventually I ended up watching it from beginning to the end. Then I read almost all the comments and that is the reason I am chiming myself. I found that comment where the guy said this video may put people with no friends or help in a worse place. Then I saw the other comment where this was brought up and you mentioned you needed it. So here is another reinforcement. That guy is generalising and he is very wrong to do so! When I watched the video I was happy for you. I have no friends or support and I am too far gone to be able to get help. I am going down alone. However, not even for a split second it crossed my mind that your video was hitting me in a bad way. Yes, I know I don't have what you have, still it was good to see that this kind of thing exists. Like a movie with a good ending. Please give a shout out from me to all your friends who participated in the video, they did an amazing job! The video is awesome, it was uplifting to see! Maybe in another life I'll have friends like you. Just make sure you keep them then you'll be fine. Now time for me to watch some DIY videos.

      Thank you mate, deeply, thank you. I will not assume or patronise your situation or the events that have lead you there, but I will say this. If the compassion you have just shown a stranger on the internet is anything to go by, I am positive there is a community out there for you (or even in here, on the internet). Though I count the contributors in this video some of my closer friends, I've only met a handful of them in person, and briefly at that. All we shared to start with was a love of woodwork and filming videos about it... a few years later and they have helped pick me up when I most needed it. I don't think you need wait until the next life. In either faith if you are inclined that way, DIY, or community service, online or off in the real world, I feel there are people out there like you, for you to find. All the best. --James

    It's so important to reach out to your mates. Talk to them, check in with them, and show up as best you can for them when they need it. Because at the end of the day, it's one more person who'll still be around and able to show up for you, or anyone else, when needed. Sometimes just showing someone they're seen or important enough to be engaged with, is enough to cast enough of the right type of doubt in their head, at the right time. And if you really struggle with any ideas about it. A check I keep in the back of my mind; "What would I want someone to do, if that was one of the people I loved and cared about?". I'm glad you're helping spread the message. I've experienced similar myself, which lead to my family never being a family. And other pretty messed up experiences. Things that made me feel impossibly low, and impossible worthless. Until I started to heal, by seeing those I could help, by sharing my experiences, and helping support as well as mentor others.

    This really resonates. Our child was born with special needs. All the planning we had done, all the savings we had saved were decimated in short order. There was no way my wife could ever work to assist with the bills since she was taking care of him 24/7. I worked constantly and the medical bills piled up and collectors hounded us relentlessly. Bills from months in the hospital kept on piling on and we had to file bankruptcy repayment plans twice. Diapers are expensive and we had to buy an untold number over his 21 yr lifespan, especially as he grew into an adult. There was zero viable plan for our retirement. We stayed together as a team, but saw many couples break up and usually the guy bailed on the woman and kid. I look back on those times and it was so incredibly dark, and before the internet and any sort of support mindset. Every friendship we had faded away because we were in a situation that was never going to get any better and it exhausted them. Everyone's situation has it different and you are no more or less a man than me. I am truly thankful that your beautiful child does not appear to have special needs and I hope that no child on earth ever does. It is important to mention that as bad as we had it, we knew for certain that we were fortunate that it was not worse. Special needs parenting is mourning. You mourn for the life that will never be for your child, you mourn for the grandchildren you will never have, and you wonder constantly whether or not you planned for their care properly after you work yourself to death. I'm glad you are talking about this and bringing attention to the issue. I know things are different there than here in the US, but please be certain to place your support group advertisements in hospitals and care homes where special needs families frequent. Take care.

    Man this video is so important to me ❤ There is nothing to complain about here. I can feel your struggle. I myself had been severely depressed for years and my biggest help was therapy, my wife, my children and close friends. After a breakdown, it helped me to deal with it openly. So when someone asked me how I was doing or how this happened, I could answer freely and openly and that felt good. At some point you manage to give your emotions the right space and continue to grow with them. Don't be so hard on yourself, we're all just human. It wasn't the big steps that were difficult, it was the many small ones along the way that you had to take. Be proud of yourself because you did the only right thing and accepted the help offered. Thanks Ben, your comment was especially well timed. The previous comment I just replied to challenged some of my naive assumptions. He was completely right in that not everyone is lucky enough to have folks close to them to reach out to. Chicken and Egg situation, some people are down because of lack of close relationships. Everyones struggles will be different. Thanks for the re-affirmation. I wasn't doubting my decission to make this video, but you've lifted my mood from humbled to proud again.

      Yes, I read that. I'm glad to have a few close friends and not a lot of casual ones. As a father of three children and no contact with his grandparents, I understand his comment and wish him a lot of strength to get through the whole thing. I feel his bitterness and despair but also his will to resolve this situation. For each of us, there are reasons that lead to us not feeling well and throwing us off track. It's up to everyone to edit them themselves. You will find your way through this difficult time and emerge from it stronger and feel comfortable in your own skin again, just like I did. I'm sending you a big, strong hug from Thuringia. You're worth it.❤

    I’m reluctant to post this, but …there is a huge hole in these well-meaning projects, like this video and TEACS that nobody is talking about. Many of the people who are suffering and close to the edge either think they have no friends or GENUINELY have no friends. Videos like this only makes it worse - seeing others in a similar situation to yourself having a great number of ‘friends’ coming to their aid makes them feel even MORE isolated. Yes… I’m talking about me. Yes, I’m seeing a professional and I seem to be past the danger zone, so I’m not looking for sympathy. I’ve learned to like my own company and I no longer rely on others to feel good about myself. My feel-good ‘friend’ is my shed and my woodworking tools. It’s my sanctuary. It’s my hideaway. When I’m over there - in the shed - creating… I’m in a state of… contentment. But some days, that shed feels like it’s on the other side of the world - and I just can’t take that first step to get there. Anyway, my main point is… some people DON’T have a network of friends and family to help them through their ‘situation’. I’m extremely lucky to have an exceptionally caring GP and a psychologist that listens.

      Firstly mate, thank you. Having read your story I know that sharing this must have taken careful consideration. For that, I am all the more thankful to hear your point of view. I am under no illusion I am extremely lucky. I come from a place of privilege having the support around me, my personal challenge was admitting I needed it. I am glad to hear your professional help is able to step in to help fill the gaps in your own network. Are you Aussie too? Living here is also a blessing. While it could be a lot better, the sheer number of free services on top of Medicare gives folks lots of options. I'd guess in many places like the US they are not as fortunate. I hope people reading your comment who can relate don't take away a negative. They are not alone. Like you, they may have good professional help available, or free counselling services like TIACS, or even some like-minded randoms in an internet community of shared interest. I take your point videos like this may stir some painful emotions in some people, but on the whole, based on the response I've gotten from friends and strangers who are now reaching out to get the help they need, I am hopeful it does mostly good. All the best, James

      For me, even at my lowest, I could never contemplate leaving my family. I was a non-functioning human, that was bad enough. At work though, I constantly see those who were pushed beyond that point. It is tragic, heartbreaking, and preventable. Thanks for helping share the message 👍

    James. You may have rescued more than your mental health. Actually your tears show you what you really rescued. Your relationships, and the most important one of all, your marriage. I thought I had made it through some really hard times and had manfully toughed it out, but in the end I lost everything. Thank you for this video. Thank you for all the people that it will help to fix and thank you to all my favorite makers who helped out and brought the story alive. A risk well taken.

      So sorry to hear of your loss mate 😥 I didn't recognise the username but the profile pick gave it to me. I enjoy the little lego builds, especially the stop motion ones. I hope you can find the balance in the shed and are talking everything out with folks in your circle. Getting any workshop time is tough for me right now, but I don't begrudge it, playing with bubba is its own reward.

    Thanks for being strong and sharing your story I am sure it will help. Luckily I seem to know when I need to have a chat or do something to get rid of those black dogs, unfortunately comes from having lost 3 cousins to suicide. I miss them. 3 out of 16 of my generation on my mums side. 2 males and 1 female. Although I am able to do most things people do to reduce stress and move those dogs on my favorite is woodworking. Although I keep trying to do it as a side hustle most of my efforts go to making things for my grand-daughters which I really don't mind. Next project is a new cubby at their new house. To everyone who reads this comment thank you just for being you and please get help if you think you need it.
